Though only having twenty-three years of daily yogic self-practice, Jonathan has had a daily physical discipline for thirty. His desire to understand how the body moves started early, with triathlon, boxing and weight training, and alongside this, a call to teach – first in Scouts and then in music and singing.
In 1989 he began to teach himself yoga through Meera Metha’s Iyengar Yoga and took his first Tai Chi class. It was at this moment that his physical studies began in earnest and the publication of Power Yoga further grounded his commitment to practice.
Many years of serious self study led to teaching yoga in 2000. The seriousness continued and helped Jonathan to physically fall apart, which he sees as a great, great gift.
He began teaching YogaMonks in 2001 as an attempt to express the relationships he was discovering and the refinement of this work continues to this day. He has shared his work at Yogagames, Nike and British Wheel of Yoga conferences and his book, Pilates Yoga, published in 2002 is still being reprinted.
A dynamic turning point came in 2007 when he found his teachers and the heart of his unique method began to take shape. Now, as the organic process which is YogaMonks continues to change, grow and expand, Jonathan is happy to offer gifted teachers along with courses and classes to the earnest, serious or simply interested student.
Thanks to the grace of his teachers, twenty-three years of self practice and a healthy humility, ’I'm feeling more and more as though I’ve only just begun’.
